One reason poker players don’t go online on poker rooms is that they’re afraid of the “randomness” of cards. Up to now, computer algorithms have tried hard enough to simulate real random deal of cards. As a matter of fact, you still don’t know if cards are dealt 100% randomly or not, because the only interface you have with the dealer is your mac poker software.

A company, Gioia, has just released a new strange beast : the Cut’N'Shuffle. This machine has been engineered for online poker rooms, it’s basically a mechanical dealer. The machine is constantly filmed so as a player, you’ll be able to check the videos to see if there wasn’t a problem with the “randomness” of the cards.

You should check out this video if you want to see it in action. I like the concept, i don’t know if that’s the most important reason some players won’t go online but it’s still a step further done.

In this tutorial, I’ll explain to you how to benefit from the $600 bonus on Full tilt Poker. I’ll also explain how, in detail, this bonus works. As I suppose most of you are skeptical about all these figures poker rooms advertise, you probably think it’s some kind of a lure. It is. But there’s also real money and benefits if you understand in detail how the bonus works. And be prepared, there’ll be some mathematics involved… hehe :)

Downloading and Installing Full Tilt

I’m also writing this tutorial as i’ve observed most of referrals who subscribe to Full Tilt from this site don’t include the bonus code. So, i hope this’ll make it easier for future subscribers.

Okay.

First, you need to download and install Full tilt for the operating system you’re running. So far, FTP has been officially supporting Mac OSX and Microsoft Windows. I just hope you’re running a Mac when reading this. Because they’re awesome.

Download links for FTP are a the top of this page.

The install process is pretty straightforward, nothing special involved.

Registering a new FTP account

Next step is creating a new account. If you want to benefit from FTP bonus codes, you need to input the referral code when registering and only then. I don’t think you can enter a referral code after registering, correct me if i’m wrong.

The account creation screen looks like this :

That’s the referral code you must enter when registering to be eligible to the $600 bonus : MACHOLDEM

Now, you’re all set up to benefit from the bonus, if you need to understand how the bonus works in detail, read the next part of the article.

The complicated stuff

The first important thing to understand is that the $600 are for real money players. They won’t give you $600 immediately when you signup for the first time. That’s the catch, and it’s a 100% bonus, meaning they’ll give you $600 only if you put $600 of your own money in the game. You give, they give. Second important thing, what’s taken into account, is the INITIAL deposit. If your first deposit is $100, you’ll only get $100 of bonus. If it’s $600, you’ll get the $600. That’s what i’ve understood.

Bonus can be earned when playing in ring games or tournaments+Sit&Go, rules differ between those two.

In Ring games

In that type of table, for each dollar raked from the pot (the commission that goes to FTP), each player being dealt cards earns 1 FULL TILT POINT. 1 full tilt point equals $0,06. Not much hey :) And you can only earn three points per hand. So this is only interesting when playing small stakes.

In tournaments and Sit&Gos

Here, earnings are faster. For $1 put into tournaments or sit&go fees, you’ll be rewarded of 7 FTP ($0.42). A bit better.

You’ll get your bonus in increments of 10% or $20, depending on your first deposit.

For example, if your first deposit is $100, you’ll be rewarded $10 (10%) every time you get around 160 Full Tilt Points.

If your first deposit is $600, you’ll be rewareded $20 every time you get 330 FTP :)

Well that’s if for now, hope you’ll benefit quickly from the FTP bonus. Feel free to add some comments to make things clearer :)

Now that the iPad has been launched in the states, the question that resurfaces is : Will you be able to play online poker on the iPad ?

Quick answer : NO ! Or, not yet ! :p

This little beauty first seemed like a perfect poker table, it’s very fast, based on Mac OSX (or very close to the iPhone OS) but:

  • AppStore validation is still the same about gambling and cash games : NO REAL MONEY GAMES ON THE APPSTORE!
  • Still NO FLASH support.

Adobe Flash support would have limited the problem of running native poker applications but it seems like Adobe and Apple are in a conflict that doesn’t go in the way of the consumer.

Well, with that said, what’s your point of view about the Apple iPad ?

I personally don’t really see the point of that new fancy gadget: i won’t be replacing my beloved iPhone, and doesn’t come even close to my Macbook. I still doesn’t support USB disc mounting, no multitasking yet (well, apparently until iPad/iPhone OS4).

The most ridiculous thing about the iPad is that you need another device (or computer) to sync it with… You need itunes on another computer to put music on it, you can’t even connect a camera to copy your photos to it.

So this product isn’t even aimed at people who don’t have a computer yet.

The good thing is that there are software updates. So Apple, please fix this before it becomes another Nokia nGage or Windows Millenium ! tee hee :)

If you own a poker blog and already know how all the affiliate system works, you probably have encountered the “sub-affiliate” section in Full Tilt or PokerStars member site.

First of all, i was wondering what it was about. The concept is really simple: this time, you’re not recruiting players but other affiliates so they can promote poker rooms online (or offline).

The share revenue you will benefit is based on which payment plan the affiliate you recruit chooses. It works as follows :

  • PRP – for all PRP affiliates that you refer, you will receive 3% of the net revenue generated by their players
  • CPA – for all CPA affiliates that you refer, you will receive a $5 fixed CPA for each qualified referral they send Full Tilt Poker

The other question is how can you recruit them effectively. I personally think sub-affiliates will in 90% cases be bloggers, webmasters, etc. You’ll have to aim the affiliation that way. People interested in online revenue, affiliation will be these people. You’ll have to write about search engine optimisation, poker blog tips, poker software tools and such… Themes not always 100% related to poker can also work: SEO is a vast them, in many ways related to online revenue so, if you have an online blog about SEO, there’ll always be someone interested in some new ways of making money.

You’lle have more information about sub-affiliates on the FullTilt affiliates website.

If like me, you’re using a macbook that’s hooked up to a second monitor like an HDTV, you probably thought it’s not always convenient, especially if you’re on a couch. Well the guys at RPA Tech created an app for the iPhone that lets you use your phone as a mouse :) Then, you’ll be able to play poker from your couch on your HDTV using only your iPhone !

I think they had a great idea, and it works flawlessly ! All you need is an iPhone and a mac (or Windows) computer on the same network.

You can check out this demo on youtube :

The app is only $0.99 and the server for your computer is free.

People start playing poker every day every where over the world. Well, at least, where poker is considered legal. The bad thing with poker is that it can be a bit complicated for beginners at first when they don’t have the essential information on how to start a players career. This article focuses essentially on online poker or poker on a computer, and specifically on the mac :)

First thing you’ll need is an account on FullTilt or Pokerstars (links are at the top of this page).

Secondly, i must say, the most popular variant is the community poker holdem. It’s called community because some dealed cards are seen by all the players, placed in the middle of the table.

Here’s an extract of the rules from Wikipedia :

Betting structures

Hold ‘em is normally played using small and big blind bets – forced bets by two players. Antes (forced contributions by all players) may be used in addition to blinds, particularly in later stages of tournament play. A dealer button is used to represent the player in the dealer position; the dealer button rotates clockwise after each hand, changing the position of the dealer and blinds. The small blind is posted by the player to the left of the dealer and is usually equal to half of the big blind. The big blind, posted by the player to the left of the small blind, is equal to the minimum bet. In tournament poker, the blind/ante structure periodically increases as the tournament progresses. (In some cases, the small blind is some other fraction of a small bet, e.g. $10 is a common small blind when the big blind is $15, and still other tables may use two equal blinds. The double-blind structure described above is a commonly used and more recent adoption.)

When only two players remain, special ‘head-to-head’ or ‘heads up’ rules are enforced and the blinds are posted differently. In this case, the person with the dealer button posts the small blind, while his/her opponent places the big blind. The dealer acts first before the flop. After the flop, the dealer acts last and continues to do so for the remainder of the hand.

The three most common variations of hold ‘em are limit hold ‘em, no-limit hold ‘em and pot-limit hold ‘em. Limit hold ‘em has historically been the most popular form of hold ‘em found in casino live action games in the United States.[19] In limit hold ‘em, bets and raises during the first two rounds of betting (pre-flop and flop) must be equal to the big blind; this amount is called the small bet. In the next two rounds of betting (turn and river), bets and raises must be equal to twice the big blind; this amount is called the big bet. No-limit hold ‘em is the form most commonly found in televised tournament poker and is the game played in the main event of the World Series of Poker. In no-limit hold ‘em, players may bet or raise any amount over the minimum raise up to all of the chips the player has at the table (called an all-in bet). The minimum raise is equal to the big blind. If someone wishes to re-raise, they must raise at least the amount of the previous raise. For example, if the big blind is $2 and there is a raise of $6 to a total of $8, a re-raise must be at least $6 more for a total of $14. If a raise or re-raise is all-in and does not equal the size of the previous raise, the initial raiser can not re-raise again. This only matters of course if there was a call before the re-raise. In pot-limit hold ‘em, the maximum raise is the current size of the pot (including the amount needed to call).

Most casinos that offer hold ‘em also allow the player to the left of the big blind to post an optional live straddle, usually double the amount of the big blind, which then acts as the big blind. No-limit games may also allow multiple re-straddles, in any amount that would be a legal raise.

Play of the hand

Each player is dealt two private cards in hold ‘em. They are dealt first.

Play begins with each player being dealt two cards face down, with the player in the small blind receiving the first card and the player in the button seat receiving the last card dealt. (As in most poker games, the deck is a standard 52-card deck containing no jokers.) These cards are the player’s hole or pocket cards. These are the only cards each player will receive individually, and they will only (possibly) be revealed at the showdown, making Texas hold ‘em a closed poker game.

The hand begins with a “pre-flop” betting round, beginning with the player to the left of the big blind (or the player to the left of the dealer, if no blinds are used) and continuing clockwise. A round of betting continues until every player has folded, put in all of their chips, or matched the amount put in by all other active players. See betting for a detailed account. Note that the blinds are considered “live” in the pre-flop betting round, meaning that they contribute to the amount that the blind player must contribute, and that, if all players call around to the player in the big blind position, that player may either check or raise.

After the pre-flop betting round, assuming there remain at least two players taking part in the hand, the dealer deals a flop, three face-up community cards. The flop is followed by a second betting round. This and all subsequent betting rounds begin with the player to the dealer’s left and continue clockwise.

After the flop betting round ends, a single community card (called the turn or fourth street) is dealt, followed by a third betting round. A final single community card (called the river or fifth street) is then dealt, followed by a fourth betting round and the showdown, if necessary.

In all casinos, the dealer will burn a card before the flop, turn, and river. Because of this burn, players who are betting cannot see the back of the next community card to come. This is done for historical/traditional reasons, to avoid any possibility of a player knowing in advance the next card to be dealt due to it being marked.[9]

The showdown

If a player bets and all other players fold, then the remaining player is awarded the pot and is not required to show his hole cards. If two or more players remain after the final betting round, a showdown occurs. On the showdown, each player plays the best poker hand they can make from the seven cards comprising his two hole cards and the five community cards. A player may use both of his own two hole cards, only one, or none at all, to form his final five-card hand. If the five community cards form the player’s best hand, then the player is said to be playing the board and can only hope to split the pot, since each other player can also use the same five cards to construct the same hand.[9]

If the best hand is shared by more than one player, then the pot is split equally among them, with any extra chips going to the first players after the button in clockwise order. It is common for players to have closely-valued, but not identically ranked hands. Nevertheless, one must be careful in determining the best hand; if the hand involves fewer than five cards, (such as two pair or three of a kind), then kickers are used to settle ties (see the second example below). Note that the card’s numerical rank is of sole importance; suit values are irrelevant in Hold’em. The last player to bet is the first player to show there hand.

Another thing to get down is the glossary terms, they are very specific to poker and are very important if you want to understand a standard article or conversation. Here’s a link you should definitely bookmark from Wikipedia: Glossary of poker terms.

To close this article, i’d just add if you want to be serious about your poker career, you should install a poker assistant like poker copilot or pokertracker and of course, start with playing fake money ;)

Have fun!

Great news for all the mac community in this new year of 2010 : PokerTracker3 is FINALLY released for the mac. After years in the making, you will be able to use this tracker that was made popular on the Windows platform. But please beware, this version for the mac is still in early development stages, it’s an alpha release so you’ll have to deal with some bugs :)

Also newcommers, be careful: PokerTracker relies on Postgresql so if you’re a developer, installing PokerTracker may overwrite your existing postgresql server. I have not tested that as i didn’t have a pgsql server running but it may do. Didn’t see any option to untick postgresql in the installer.

PokerTracker 3 comes with a 60 trial period, full version costs $90 and Microstakers version is $50 :)

Download: http://www.pokertracker.com/products/PT3/download.php

By the way, if you’re not always using PokerTracker and do not want Postgresql running on your mac startup (something i like to keep control of!!!)

Just delete this file :

/Library/LaunchDaemons/com.edb.launchd.postgresql-8.4.plist

This is an interesting question when you first start playing online poker on the mac. You’ll quickly find out there aren’t as many poker software as on Microsoft Windows. Basically, you’ll only have to make a choice between FulltiltPoker or PokerStars.

If you were already a pokerplayer on Windows, you probably know these two rooms as they also are very popular on that plaftorm.

The good thing with the mac plaftorm at the moment i write this article is that the choice is so reduced you’ll want to know a bit more about the differences between them. On Windows, there are SO many rooms, it can be overwhelming at first and could lead you into some problems if you chose one that has a bad reputation.

PokerStars and Fulltilt both have VERY good reputation, that’s also why they have a mac client. Only the most wealthy companies would develop a mac client.

The most straightforward thing to do first would be for you to try both of them :) And find out by yourself which one suits you best.

If you don’t want to read all my post about the comparaison, the conclusion is to use Fulltilt.

If you want to know more and why, read on :)

First of all, you have two possibilities when you want to start playing poker, on the mac or on whatever other platform, be it table card game or computer assisted poker software, etc:

  • Real Money poker game / Fake Money poker game, or Multplayer online poker
  • Poker simulators, which can be called offline single player poker

Usually, real money poker software always come with a fake money mode. For the both best online poker rooms (Full Tilt and PokerStars), you will need to create an account, and creating an account doesn’t mean actually putting money in the game, you can create an account for free.

So still, two choices to make :

Choose whichever you want, just try both to see which one you prefer, i’ll post an extended comparaison between those two soon :)

Now, for poker simulators, there are MANY MANY software around, but the one i have found to be the most entertaining is :

It’s user interface is polished and fun, with all kind of characters as opponents. You should really try it and leave a comment if you think it sucks or whatever :) I’m still looking for some other good offline poker software.
